Overcoming Barriers, Opening Channels

In your practice, it isn't a matter of whether you will encounter patients with questions about sexuality or STDs but how frequently you will. Pharmacists are often the first, and sometimes the only, health care provider with whom patients with STDs come into contact.

Pharmacists' scope of practice is expanding and this expansion creates opportunities to assist in the provision of several types of health services. These include identfying patients who may be at increased risk for sexually transmitted infections; recognizing when common pharmacy customer requests may indicate a sexually transmitted disease; and helping clients reduce their risk through safer sex practices.

HIV/STD Pharmacy Counseling is a unique educational program for practicing and pre-professional pharmacists to increase awareness of HIV/STD issues, to improve counseling skills, and to recognize and address common barriers to effective patient-provider interaction.
