Get all the facts about the leading cause of birth defects in the U.S.
Prenatal exposure to alcohol is the leading cause of birth defects in the United States. Different studies show prevalence rates for the United States that range from .3 to 2.2 cases per 1,000 births. This means that each year in the United States, between 1,200 and 8,800 babies are born with FAS. Many more are born with alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder (ARND). Early diagnosis and appropriate management has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of secondary disabilities and increase positive outcomes.
AEI has developed a CD-ROM and website for adoptive, biological, and foster parents as well as other lay and professional care providers. The media include learning modules on primary and secondary characteristics, as well as the diagnostic process, delivered in two different formats tailored for differing learning preferences. Video and still images of all characteristics are augmented by cases studies of children affected prenatally by alcohol. A self-check quiz with feedback and printable resources roundout this exceptional product. The FAS Multimedia Guide: Characteristics and Diagnosis is available direct from AEI and national distribution is presently being negotiated.
