The Academic Edge

Being informed is the first step to HIV/STD prevention.

AEI created four 3-5 minute videos of conflict situations depicting the lead up to a conflict and three parallel resolutions (individual, mentored, and with the help of a group). We also developed a 60 page classroom guide. The videos were delivered over the web and classrooms participated in group activities followed by cross-classroom interaction in web-based bulletin boards. In addition to working through activities and responding to comments from geographically distanced classes, the students were able to ask questions of the characters in the video and be mentored by an online guide, "Socrates."

A field trial of the materials showed significant improvement in the student's ability to analyze and provide possible solutions to conflicts depicted in videos. Teachers and students alike indicated they liked the materials and interactivity and would like to continue using them as well as work with new modules.
